This is a newly created opportunity for a visionary leader in the field of cardiovascular research to lead a transformative cardiovascular research program that will profoundly impact the patients and community of one of Australia’s fastest growing and most diverse regions.
This exciting appointment creates the opportunity to develop collaborations across the four partners, including UNSW Sydney, South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD), the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, and the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research. Collectively these four organisations will work together to support the Chair in creating a vibrant cardiovascular research hub based in South West Sydney.
The successful appointee will provide outstanding academic and clinical leadership, foster excellence in collaborative cardiovascular research and provide innovative teaching, clinical care and engagement activities. The key objective will be to develop a world class research program as evidenced by publications in high impact journals, success in peer reviewed funding schemes, building cardiovascular research capability, and research impact.
Relevant fields of research for the appointee are broad and include clinical or basic research relevant to cardiovascular disease, although, with the expectation that the successful applicant will be a focus for improving the substantial burden of cardiovascular disease in South West Sydney.
The successful appointee will have:
- MBBS (or equivalent medical degree) and specialty qualification in cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery or similar. A PhD or other advanced degree is also desirable, but not essential.
- Relevant professional experience at the appropriate level, including demonstrated skill in leading a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrated commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
- Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to work and influence across disciplines, faculties, institutions, and professional bodies.
- Evidence of being an inspirational role model for other academics seeking mentoring, guidance, advice and support.
- Proven leadership of research projects and leadership of research teams, including high quality supervision of honours and postgraduate research projects.
- Demonstrated capacity to lead by example in supporting equal opportunity and equity, diversity and inclusion policy and programs.
- Proven leadership in developing significant productive relationships and engagement with industry and the community, with success in attracting significant industry funding.
