Browns find blood clots in Goodwin’s legs and lungs; his season is in jeopardy

Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin will miss the start of Browns’ training camp because blood clots have been discovered in his legs and lungs. The condition puts his season in jeopardy.

The first practice of training camp is scheduled for July 22 in Greenbrier, West Virginia.  Goodwin won’t be part of it, although he indicated he is participating in team meetings.

The Browns on July 21 placed Goodwin on the non-football illness list. Goodwin told the team’s website he felt discomfort during spring practices, but the Browns did not share the information until now. Goodwin participated in minicamp in early June.

“It was really alarming at first because I’ve experienced injury throughout my career, but it’s never been anything like this that could turn into something detrimental if it’s not taken care of,” Goodwin said. “It was frightening at first, but now I’m at ease with it. I’ve prayed and just given it over to God. It’s out of my control, and the only thing I can control is my effort and attitude and how I approach each day moving forward.”

Goodwin isn’t the only Browns receiver out of action. Anthony Schwartz and Michael Woods are starting camp on the non-football injury list with undisclosed injuries. Schwartz was on the sideline for most of minicamp last month. Guard Colby Gossett is also on the non-football injury list.

Goodwin, 32, counts against the 90-man roster, as do Schwartz, Woods and Gossett. The good news for the Browns is linebackers Jacob Phillips (pectoral) and Anthony Walker (quadriceps tendon) were not on an injury list July 21, which means they are cleared to practice. The Browns will be cautious with both with the season opener against the Bengals on Sept. 10 at FirstEnergy Stadium still seven weeks away.

Doctors will be even more cautious with Goodwin. There is a chance he won’t play this season. He could also be made part of the 53-man squad when rosters are cut to 53 on Aug. 29 and then placed on the non-football illness list, where he would have to remain for a minimum of four weeks.

The Browns signed Goodwin to give them a deep threat, Goodwin has played for four teams over nine seasons. He has 18 career touchdown catches. He has played in 102 games and has 187 career receptions for 3,023 yards.

“It’s one of those things that is totally out of my control, out of the doctor’s control and out of the trainer’s control,” Goodwin said. “It’s really an unfortunate deal we have to deal with, but we need to deal with it in the proper fashion. The Browns are doing everything in their power to support me through it by allowing me to be around the team, on the field and in meetings.

“I’m grateful for that, and hopefully this thing gets back under control and I can feel my body and what I need to feel so I can help this team make this run.”

Goodwin is on a one-year, $1.7 million contract.
