Genome-wide association studies of cardiovascular disease
According to the NHGRI-EBI catalogue of human genome-wide association studies (https://www.ebi.ac.uk/gwas), 1700 studies have been performed on phenotypes related to common cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and hypertension. Hundreds of genomic loci associated with these phenotypes have been identified. Although polygenic scores that summarise the aggregate effect of these genetic variants have the potential to improve risk stratification for individuals, they haven’t yet made much impact in clinical care (Physiol Rev doi:10.1152/physrev.00024.2022).
