Washington – U.S. Rep. Brandon Williams is recovering at his apartment here after suffering a serious infection related to his heart bypass surgery two week ago, a spokesman said Friday.
“The congressman is recovering from his surgery. However, he faced a localized but serious infection that required immediate treatment this week,” spokesman Taylor Weyeneth said in a statement.
Williams, 56, sought treatment at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, and missed votes in the House of Representatives for the remainder of the week.
His office did not disclose details of the post-operative complication until Friday.
“The medical team at George Washington University Hospital placed him on an IV antibiotic treatment, self-administered in his apartment,” Weyeneth said.
He added, “This procedure has followed the expected recovery path. Even with this slight complication, Rep. Williams is impatient to get back to work.”
Williams, a first-term Republican, was elected to represent the 22nd Congressional District in Central New York in November. The district spans all of Onondaga, Madison and Oneida counties and the southeastern tip of Oswego County.
