FARMINGVILLE, NY — New York Blood Center is hosting a blood drive with the Town of Brookhaven on Wednesday at its town hall, according to a news release.
It will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1 Independence Hill.
The town, a long-time partner of the blood center, has goal for this blood drive is to collect over 3,000 blood donations.
There will be cupcakes and decorations in celebration of the donors, and the 3,000th donor will receive a summer-themed basket and each donor will receive a McDonald’s voucher and a chance to win six New York Mets tickets.
Blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration recently lifted eligibility restrictions for individuals who lived in Europe during certain periods of time.
It only takes one hour to donate, and a single donation can save several lives.
Roughly one in seven hospital admissions require a blood transfusion, with those in need including cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more.
