NOIDA: The district combined hospital in Noida got a six-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) on Monday. The unit will have specialised doctors to take care of newborns born with congenital heart and other disorders.
The NICU unit has been set up on the third floor of the hospital building close to the woman’s ward. Dedicated paediatricians have been deployed at the new ward for round-the-clock treatment of children and to manage any critical condition.
According to the doctor, the NICU ward is crucial for treating premature babies or those facing health issues right from birth. He also added that in case of 37 weeks premature delivery, children are born underweight and require intensive care at the NICU ward.
Dr Renu Agarwal, chief medical superintendent at the district combined hospital of Noida said, “The NICU ward of the hospital has been equipped with advanced machines, which will provide round-the-clock care to newborns under the supervision of qualified paediatricians.”
The doctors explained that largely children with difficulty in breathing, heart disease, or any other infections at the time of birth are kept in the NICU ward for observation. If a pregnant woman is diabetic or suffers from high blood pressure or has a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or had heavy blood loss during delivery, their children are often kept in the NICU ward. The officers added that the hospital attends to over 10 deliveries every day and in the absence of a NICU ward, the children were referred to Child PGI in Noida. But now, the facility will help reduce referrals well.
