Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 18 Review

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 18, titled “Rages at Ringside,” continues the intense battle between the Soul Reapers and the formidable Stern Ritter forces. Viewers are provided with an update on the battle’s progress, revealing that the odds are not in the Soul Reapers’ favor. A staggering 42% of their forces are still alive, and their military strength has dwindled to less than 30%. With their backs against the wall, the Soul Reapers must now regroup under the leadership of Captain Shunsui Kyoraku.

Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 18 then picks up with the continuation of Squad 9 Captain Kensei Muguruma and Squad 3 Captain Rōjūrō Ōtoribashi’s fight against the Stern Ritter S, “The Superstar” Mask De Masculine. While some, myself included, may find the replay of a sequence from the previous episode a bit time-wasting, the actual fight is incredibly well-animated. Muguruma’s bankai, a fist-based attack, perfectly complements Ōtoribashi’s performance-based bankai, making them a great match against the wrestler Stern Ritter S, who relies on his massive body and the support of his enthusiastic fan James, compensates for the slight frustration.

The animosity between the Stern Ritters and the Soul Reapers is palpable during the fight, particularly as the tide turns in favor of the Stern Ritters. The banter exchanged in Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 18 between the combatants solidifies Stern Ritters’ perception of the Soul Reapers as the antagonists in this conflict. The true nature of their relationship, to me at least, has always been vague enough that I have never fully bought into that the lines between good and evil in the conflict between the Weidenreich and the Soul Society as black and white as either side believes.

Moreover, Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 18 brings excitement with the triumphant return of Rukia Kuchiki and Renji Abarai, fresh from their training at the Soul King’s Palace  Squad 0 Captain Ichibe Hyosube. Both characters come back with new looks, and Renji, embracing his “villain” role, shows significant improvements in his powers with his seemingly greatly improved Bankai, So-Oh Zabimaru. The question remains whether he can stand up to the seemingly invincible S, whose power continues to grow with the support of his devoted fan, James. It’s exciting to see the series exploring different ways to demonstrate the powers of these formidable opponents.

In a compelling flashback sequence, viewers witness Renji’s training under Squad 0’s Manako, who helps unlock his true Zanpakutō’s potential, resulting in his improved Bankai So-Oh Zabimaru. The visual treat of Renji’s enhanced Bankai raises questions about the true extent of his newfound powers and adds depth to a character who may not have a significant impact on the overall outcome of the conflict but is determined to contribute to the fight. Although characters like S and Renji may not have a major impact on the overall outcome, their contributions add depth to the storyline and keep the viewers invested.

The reappearance of Renji and Rukia gives hope that more of the series’ titular characters, including Ichigo and friends, will soon return from their training, injecting freshness and intrigue into the plot. While Rukia’s presence in this episode is relatively minimal, Renji’s impressive performance against S sets the stage for more exciting showcases from other returning characters. Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 18‘s after-credits scene anonymity hints that this battle is far from over, and the true extent of King Yhwach’s power remains unknown, leaving me eager for the next episode.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War Episode 18, “Rages at Ringside,” successfully ramps up the tension and excitement as the battle intensifies following an episode that had me feeling a lull. The ongoing conflict showcases the Stern Ritters’ strength and determination to view the Soul Reapers as villains, raising the stakes for our beloved characters.

While some may have been critical of the slow plot progression, the triumphant return of Rukia and Renji breathes new life into the series, hinting at more epic showcases to come. “Rages at Ringside” proves that the series still holds exciting surprises and potential for character growth and power development. With the return of familiar faces and the ongoing clash with the Stern Ritters, the series remains fresh and captivating, ensuring fans will stay glued to their screens, eagerly anticipating what comes next in this thrilling arc.
