Russian air defences shot down a Ukrainian drone as it approached Moscow, the city’s mayor said, marking the latest in a flurry of recent air attacks on the capital.
“Today at around 11am (08:00 GMT) a drone attempted to make a breakthrough toward Moscow. It was destroyed while approaching by air defence forces,” Sergei Sobyanin said.
The Russian defence ministry said the drone was destroyed over the southern Podolsky district. It added there “were no casualties” and that no damage had been caused.
Moscow’s Vnukovo international airport temporarily suspended flights, saying the move was taken “for reasons beyond our control”. The suspension was lifted later on Sunday, according to Russian media.
The incident came after Ukrainian drones struck a Moscow skyscraper housing government ministries for the second time within three days earlier this week.
The Kremlin said on Monday that “all possible measures have been taken to defend civil infrastructure” against Ukrainian strikes.
