PEORIA (25News Now) – Run, walk, or trot.
Nineteen-year-old Deveraux Hubbard II died in 2013 from a pulmonary embolism caused by a blood clot.
His family started a foundation in his honor to increase education about blood clotting disorders.
They partnered with the Bleeding and Clotting Disorders Institute to host a 5K Saturday morning to encourage people to get up and get active to decrease the risk of clotting.
Deveraux Hubbard II’s father, Deveraux Hubbard, says knowing the signs could save someone’s life.
“We didn’t know anything about blood clots, so we thought if we didn’t know, and people around us didn’t know, that it would be good for us, to not only begin to learn about blood clots but also to begin to educate others about the signs and symptoms of blood clots,” said Hubbard, President of Deveraux Hubbard II Foundation.
Hubbard estimates 75 people showed up to either run the 5K or walk the 1K.
The money they raised will go towards scholarships for Richwoods High School Students, plus a donation to the National Blood Clot Alliance.
