Blood Donors Needed to Help with Summer Shortages

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WLTZ) –

As the sun shines and temperatures rise, the season of summer beckons people towards vacations, relaxation, and outdoor activities. However, amidst the allure of these warm months, an essential resource faces a challenging period: blood. Blood donations tend to dip during the summer, just as the demand for blood rises due to various factors, including accidents, surgeries, and medical treatments. In response to this annual predicament, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers is reaching out to the community, urging individuals to step forward as heroes and help replenish the blood supply.

A Drop in Donations, A Surge in Demand

The summer months bring along a unique set of circumstances that contribute to the decline in blood donations. Travel plans, school vacations, and even the weather all play a role in keeping potential donors away from blood donation centers. Unfortunately, as these factors discourage donations, the need for blood doesn’t waver. Hospitals rely on a steady supply of blood to save lives, and that need doesn’t take a vacation.

LifeSouth: The Lifeline

As the sole official blood provider for St. Francis-Emory Healthcare, LifeSouth Community Blood Centers shoulders the responsibility of ensuring that blood is available when required. However, they can’t do it alone. The organization heavily relies on the kindness and generosity of the community to step up and donate during these challenging times. Sharon Carpenter, the District Director of LifeSouth, emphasizes, “The need for blood never takes a vacation, and we need blood donors every day to make sure we are able to meet the needs of the hospitals we serve and their patients.”

Summer of Giving

To incentivize and appreciate donors, LifeSouth has launched a special summer campaign. From now until August 31st, anyone who donates blood will receive a $20 e-gift card. Those who go the extra mile by donating platelets or double red cells will receive an additional $20 e-gift card. This is not just an opportunity for seasoned donors to give back but also an invitation for first-time donors to experience the profound impact of their contribution.

Apart from the warm feeling of saving lives, all donors also receive a mini-physical, including checks on blood pressure, temperature, iron levels, and cholesterol screening. It’s a comprehensive health check bundled with the joy of altruism.

Donating blood is a relatively simple act that can have an immeasurable impact. Potential donors must be at least 17 years old (or 16 with parental permission), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good health. A photo ID is required. LifeSouth’s donor center in Columbus is conveniently located at 4519 Woodruff Road, with operational hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
