CHENNAI: A 300-bed six-storey critical care unit will be opened at the Government Stanley Medical College and Hospital soon, health minister Ma Subramanian said.
The state government has sanctioned 112 crore for this building and construction work will begin after the demolition of a 104-year-old building previously used as nursing quarters on the hospital campus. The public works department had declared the building unfit for habitation. “A nursing quarters with a capacity of housing 400 nurses will also be constructed,” he said. The critical care block will have trauma care unit, facilities for doing MRI and CT scans besides intensive care unit with lifesaving equipment and drugs.
On Tuesday, he inaugurated a sensory integration and therapeutic park for children with disabilities was established. The therapeutic park, which was set up at 30 lakh, has facilities which are designed to treat issues such as autism spectrum disorder in children, including slides, merry-go-round and other shaped pavements, walkways, playing equipment like swings and slides, and soundboards for perceptual sounding among others.
Children with conditions including congenital disorders, vision impairment, hearing impairment, neuromotor impairment, mental illness, malnutrition and genetic disorders will be tested and treated as needed at the outset, doctors say.
He also opened a renovated animal lab which houses small animals including rats and rabbits as per National Medical Commission ruled for medical colleges.
