Blood Lightning doesn’t just have a great name–they’ve got the heavy metal to back it up. Formed out of a desire to create straightforward heavy metal, their debut self-titled album delivers classic material that while not entirely subgenre-less, mostly finds a sweet spot in the same primordial space as genre progenitors Black Sabbath, executing stomping heavy metal with doomy swagger. Each track on the record (which also includes a killer choice of Sabbath covers, I’ll add) is driven by memorable and melodic riffs, with powerful vocals adding a catchy harmonic layer on top.
Today, we’re premiering the video for opening track “The Dying Starts,” which features multiple live performances heavily draped in blood-red shades as lyrics flicker past. “The Dying Starts” lays out Blood Lightning’s thesis with remarkable straightforwardness: each riff packs a punch and ties into a melodic throughline along with vocalist Jim Healey’s emphatic delivery. The band comments:
This is the first song that we wrote when we got together to write some original stuff. Doug mentioned writing “something about Vikings” and I thought the mood of the music fit that vibe. The lyrics are loosely a story of vengeance and redemption.
