An intercellular bridge for chikungunya virus transmission

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus that causes chikungunya fever. Currently there are no vaccines or antiviral therapies available for the prevention or treatment of CHIKV infections. Infections by alphaviruses involve both free virus particles (that is, the release of new viral particles from the infected cell into the extracellular fluid, to then infect a new target cell) and cell-to-cell virus transmission (which provides resistance to neutralizing antibodies). Previously, studies have shown that alphaviruses, including CHIKV, remodel the host cell architecture to induce the formation of intercellular long extensions (ILEs) that project from infected cells and form membrane bridges with neighbouring cells. However, the role of these structures in alphavirus cell-to-cell transmission remains elusive. In this new study, Kielian and colleagues report that ILEs promote the evasion of antibody neutralization and the efficient intercellular transmission of CHIKV in vitro and in vivo.
