Sheriff’s Office continues ‘Battle’ for Blood – The Suffolk News-Herald

Three-peats are a rarity, except for the annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive. The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office took home the top spot for the third consecutive year, with the Suffolk Police Department taking second.

In a show of camaraderie and community support, the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office participated in the 3rd annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive. Held on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at the Hilton Garden Inn Riverfront, the event witnessed a heartwarming turnout as residents from all walks of life came together to make a lifesaving difference.

Deputy Major David Miles discussed the continuing competition and the department’s results two years prior.

“It’s a friendly competition between the Suffolk Police, Fire and Sheriff’s Office to see who can get the most donors on that day,” Miles said. “We are the reigning champions from the past two Battle of the Badges, so we’re hoping that we can ‘three-peat.’” 

Following the drive, Sheriff’s Office Community Engagement Coordinator Katie Jones provided their stats from the American Red Cross, which saw the Sheriff’s Office collect “30 pints on a goal of 19.” The department had 26 donors registered, with one first-time donor and 16 Type O donors. She noted that these were positive results due to Type O being in critical shortage and in demand. 

“Right now, blood donations are at an all-time low, so if it takes a friendly competition for all three agencies to come together within the city, to bring awareness of blood shortages, to get people out, it’s a win-win for everybody,” Jones said. “Regardless of who’s name goes on the plaque, we’re all winners because we’re getting people to donate.”
