Schuette honored for blood donations

CARLINVILLE — Forty-eight potential blood donors registered during the Carlinville Area Hospital Auxiliary’s blood drive Sept. 6. Of those, 43 combined to give 34 units of whole blood, six red-cell units (three “double red” units) and three platelet units.

Ashley Casey and Erin Crain were recognized as first-time donors. Milestone donors include Don Schuette with 11 gallons, Doug Lynch at five gallons and Joyce Hunt with two gallons.

“We not only appreciate these donors but congratulate them for helping to save lives,” said program coordinator Joan Klaus. “People who give of themselves, literally, by donating blood deserve more than appreciation. Congratulations are definitely in order.”

Libby Bair, ImpactLife’s liaison with Springfield area blood donation organizations, explained why some potential donors are not able to give.

“There are many reasons why someone cannot donate on a given day,” Bair said. “They could have a low hemoglobin count, be under the minimum required weight, have donated more recently than safety guidelines allow, or have an existing condition that disqualifies them.

“The key point is that they may still be eligible to donate in the future if the condition no longer exists, Bair said. “We urge them to try again.”

Anyone with questions about their eligibility can call ImpactLife at 800-747-5401 or visit Bloodcenter.org.

Klaus said the Auxiliary’s next blood drive would be in January 2024, noting many other local blood drives arer planned in the Springfield area and Macoupin County.

Klaus thanked the organizations and individuals that support the drives sponsored by the CAH Auxiliary and conducted by ImpactLife.
