Red Cross blood drives scheduled across Baltimore area
APP. WELL, ONCE A MARYLAND STATE POLICE MEDEVAC RESPONDS TO A SCENE, EMERGENCY TEAMS MAY ONLY HAVE SECONDS TO PROVIDE LIFESAVING AID TO AN INJURED PERSON. NOW, THOUGH, STATE POLICE, ALONG WITH SHOCK TRAUMA TEAMS AND THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND MEDICAL SYSTEM, CREATED A NEW PARTNERSHIP. AND IT’S CALLED BLOOD ON BOARD. AS PART OF THE COLLABORATE MISSION, THE STATE POLICE TROOPER HELICOPTERS CARRY WHOLE BLOOD FOR EMERGENCY TRANSFUSIONS. MARYLAND IS THE FIRST STATE TO OFFER THIS INITIATIVE STATEWIDE. IF YOU’RE IN HEMORRHAGIC SHOCK AND YOU GET TO THE HOSPITAL WITH A LOW, BUT STILL A DECENT BLOOD PRESSURE, YOUR SURVIVAL IS ABOUT, I DON’T KNOW, 30%, 40%. IF YOU PROCEED TO THE CARDIAC ARREST, YOUR SURVIVAL IS UNDER 1%. IT’S A DRAMATIC DROP. THOSE INJURIES CAN RANGE FROM CAR CRASHES TO WORKPLACE ACCIDENTS AND SHOOTINGS. 21 CRITICALLY INJURED PEOPLE RECEIVED THOSE FIELD TRANSFUSIONS SO FAR. AND SOME OF THOSE PATIENTS MAY NOT HAVE BEE
