If you went to Somernites Cruise last weekend but haven’t had your fill of car shows this month quite yet, the Stonegate Centre in Somerset has you covered this Saturday.
A special classic car show organized by the Iron Knights and Dames Car Club will be held Saturday, September 30, from noon to 3 p.m. in the shopping center on South U.S. 27, utilizing part of the parking lot of Kroger Marketplace.
The show is purposed to help raise awareness of the need for blood donations to the Kentucky Blood Center of Somerset, which is also located in that complex, next to the Kroger store.
“Our county and surrounding (area) is about 68 percent low (on blood),” said Mike Nelson of the Iron Knights and Dames Car Club. “We need to try to fix that, because that goes to (help) the children’s hospitals, that goes to the VA (Veterans Affairs), all the surrounding hospitals. So it’s a real important thing that they’re doing and we’re trying to help them with it.”
There is no registration fee for the show, and classic car owners are encouraged to bring their vehicles and participate. There will be trophies awarded at around 3 p.m., and there are free dash plaques and free t-shirts while supplies last.
Nelson said the event is sponsored by Kentucky Blood Center and Tri-City Motors. He also said he spoke with Kroger, which is supportive of the event.
Blood will not be taken at the scene, but people who attend will be encouraged to sign up to donate blood, which they can do at the blood center or online at my.kybloodcenter.org/donor/schedules/geo.
There will also be a 50/50 raffle drawing at the car show; proceeds will go to benefit Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
“We just have to help people,” said Nelson.
