Bayhealth announced a new internal medicine and infectious disease specialist, Rafael Ruiz Gaviria, MD, has joined its team based in Sussex County.
Ruiz Gaviria joins physicians Preeti Gupta, MD; Cynthia Zarraga, MD; Antonio Zarraga, MD; Meliseanna Gibbons, MD; and Lilia Villarin, MD; and family nurse practitioner Roseann P. Velez, FNP-BC, in the Bayhealth Primary Care, Sussex Campus practice. Ruiz Gaviria is accepting adult patients specifically for infectious disease care.
Bayhealth Primary Care, Sussex Campus is part of Bayhealth Medical Group, a partnership of highly trained physicians and advanced practice clinicians, their staff, and an administrative support team that operates medical offices throughout central and southern Delaware.
“We’re very pleased that Dr. Ruiz Gaviria has joined us, bringing his specialized expertise in infectious disease to our area,” said Lawrence Ward, MD, MPH, FACP, Bayhealth vice president, physician services and clinical integration. “He will be an asset to our community members seeking a diagnosis, treatment or long-term management for any number of infectious diseases, and in providing care for patients living with HIV.”
Ruiz Gaviria earned his medical degree from Pontifical Xaverian University School of Medicine in Bogota, Colombia. After working in the field of infectious disease for several years, he came to the U.S. to complete an internal medicine residency at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. He then went on to complete fellowship training in infectious disease at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
Ruiz Gaviria sees patients ages 18 and older to diagnose and treat various infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi, including HIV, sexually transmitted diseases, nosocomial infections, hardware infections and tropical diseases.
