FDA makes blood donating more inclusive amid shortage

Decades after the FDA instituted a lifetime deferral on blood donations from gay and bisexual men, the organization announced a major change.

In the wake of a nationwide blood shortage, the FDA has instituted new guidelines to establish a blood donor screening process. Whereas the system was previously based on sexual or gender identity, the process now focuses on an Individual Donor Assessment.
