Homecoming Blood Drive: Donating is a simple way to make a big impact

by Andrew Brown | Student Leadership, Involvement, & Community Engagement

The annual Homecoming Blood Drive at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is the state’s biggest blood supplier each year. Over the past five years, Huskers have donated more than 3,300 pints.

This year’s four-day event is happening:

  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct 23, 2023 @ Nebraska East Union
  • 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct 24, 2023 @ Nebraska Union
  • 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct 25, 2023 @ Nebraska Union
  • 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct 26, 2023 @ Nebraska Union, Memorial Plaza

Students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to donate. Signup for time slots opens at 8 a.m Oct 16. Early signup is recommended. Walk-in donors will be accommodated, too.

Donors receive a free t-shirt and students will earn Homecoming Points for their organization in the HC Student Competitions.

Every whole blood donation helps three patients in need. The blood is separated into three parts — red blood cells, plasma, and platelets — with each becoming a life-saving treatment.

Volunteers needed, too. Students can earn additional Homecoming Points for their organization by assisting with donor check-in and distributing juice and snacks. Each volunteer shift is 2 hours. Sign up for a shift here.

Homecoming Blood Drive is organized by ASUN Student Government in partnership with the Nebraska Community Blood Bank and the American Red Cross.
