SARS-CoV-2 infection boosts inflammation in atherosclerotic plaques

The incidence of acute cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke, is increased in individuals with COVID-19. A study shows that SARS-CoV-2 can directly infect macrophages and foam cells in atherosclerotic plaques and contribute to plaque instability.

Four years into the COVID-19 pandemic and with over 770 million confirmed cases worldwide, and despite a massive research effort, we are still lacking a thorough understanding of COVID-19 disease. What is known, however, is that COVID-19 is not just a respiratory infection but a systemic condition with a broad range of manifestations in many organs.
