Bengaluru: The city is seeing a surge in respiratory infections. More cases of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) are being reported among children as well as adults, say doctors. Cough that refuses to go and fatigue that lingers long after illness are some of the distinguishing features of this round of infections, they point out.
Patients tend to have symptoms like those of bronchitis, which persist for up to two weeks, says Dr Sachin Kumar, senior consultant, pulmonology and critical care medicine, Sakra World Hospital. The symptoms include runny nose, nasal blockage, sore threat, headache, cough, etc.
Around 40% of OPD patients at Sakra are those with viral infections, say doctors. Children, the elderly and those with comorbidities are particularly vulnerable.
There has been an increase in community-acquired pneumonia infections too, say doctors at Aster CMI Hospital. Dr Brunda, consultant, internal medicine, Aster CMI, says there’s a rise in both upper and lower respiratory tract infections. “In adults, we are seeing more of Influenza A and B and HIN1, while RSV is increasingly being seen among children,” she says, adding dual infections are also becoming more common — for instance, H1N1 along with Influenza B. These airborne infections spread through droplets, and wearing a mask can reduce the risk.
Confirming that they are seeing a lot of RSV cases among the paediatric population, Dr Ravindra Mehta, pulmonologist and founder-director at Vaayu Pulmonary Wellness and Rehabilitation Centre, says, “Weather fluctuations and rain are standard risk factors for respiratory infections. Influenza and HIN1 are also increasingly being reported. Fortunately, few of these illnesses have serious or long-term consequences.”
Dr Mehta says the ill are more at risk. “They may get pneumonia, experience worsening of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or ILD (interstitial lung disease). They may require hospitalisation.”
Dr Kumar recommends influenza and pneumococcal vaccines for people above the age of 65 years.

Parents in India are increasingly concerned about the rising number of respiratory illnesses among children, especially as the festive season approaches. It is important for parents to be aware of the signs of respiratory infections and seek appropriate care. There are two types of respiratory infections: upper and lower respiratory tract infections. While cases of bacterial infections have decreased due to vaccinations, viral respiratory infections continue to be a concern. Experts emphasize the need for early testing and accurate diagnosis to provide appropriate treatment. Good hygiene practices, maintaining a healthy diet, and staying hydrated are important preventive measures.
Vaginal infections can be caused by various microbes such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. Common infections include candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, genital herpes, and pubic lice. Yeast and bacterial infections have distinct causes and symptoms, but can be treated with antifungal medications and antibiotics. Trichomoniasis and HPV are sexually transmitted infections that can lead to genital warts or an increased risk of cervical cancer. Pubic lice infestations are also common and can be eliminated with medication. Preventive measures include practicing good hygiene, safe sex, and making healthy lifestyle choices.
