Diphtheria is a severe infection caused by strains of bacteria known as corynebacterium diphtheriae. As per WHO, these bacteria produce toxins, which, when left untreated, can lead to dire consequences such as difficulty breathing, heart rhythm problems, and even death. Diphtheria bacteria can spread from person to person, most commonly via respiratory droplets such as coughing or sneezing. Touching infected open sores or ulcers can potentially get people sick. Those in the same home, those with a history of regular, intimate contact with the patient, and people directly exposed to secretions from the suspected infection site (e.g., mouth, skin) of the patient are at a higher risk of becoming ill.
