Construction starts on Edward Cardiovascular Institute

Construction of a new 71,000-square-foot, three-story Cardiovascular Institute Health Center on the Edward Hospital campus in Naperville is underway.

The health center at 10 W. Martin Ave. will help meet the community’s needs for outpatient cardiac care, Curt Pascoe, vice president of real estate development for Ryan Cos., said in a news release.

The center will have two catheterization laboratories, diagnostic imaging and cardiac rehabilitation and will feature caregivers from NorthShore-Edward-Elmhurst Health, Cardiac Surgery Associates and Midwest Cardiovascular Institute, the release said.

It will also serve as the main building at the new entrance to the hospital’s campus at 801 S. Washington St.

Museum volunteer Norman Walzer will give a lecture on the history of shoe and boot styles from the 1770s to the Civil War at 1 p.m. Nov. 5 at Garfield Farm Museum in Kane County.

A collection of 30 to 40 slides of shoes from Europe and the United States will form the basis for the presentation, organizers said. The presentation will also include reproductions of shoes and boots as well as wallets from the 1830s to the 1850 as well as examples of pre-Civil War shoemaking and harness-making tools.

Garfield Farm Museum is located five miles west of Geneva off of Route 38 on Garfield Road. The 374-acre site is a historically intact former 1840s farm and teamster inn being restored as an 1840s working farm museum by volunteers and donors from around the country, museum officials said.

The St. Charles Natural Resources Commission is hosting its annual Pumpkin Smash event from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 4 at the St. Charles Public Works Facility, 1405 S. Seventh Ave. in St. Charles.

Participants can toss, smash, roll or simply drop off pumpkins to be composted, officials said.

State Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, is partnering with The Marine Corps Toys for Tots program for the upcoming holiday season.

As a part of this initiative, Kifowit’s district office at 1677 Montgomery Road, Suite 116, in Aurora will serve as a drop-off location for new toys until Dec. 4.

The campaign aims to collect new, unwrapped toys to be distributed to less fortunate children, organizers said. Stuffed animals cannot be accepted.

Donations will be accepted at Kifowit’s district office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The collected toys will be turned over to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots organization on Dec. 4, officials said.
