Give a lifesaving gift: Packers, Red Cross team up for holiday season blood drive

GREEN BAY (WLUK) — As winter approaches, the American Red Cross is teaming up with the Green Bay Packers to tackle an urgent need for lifesaving blood ahead of the holiday season.

On Nov. 13 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., community members are encouraged to visit the Give Back Community Blood Drive at Lambeau Field in the Johnsonville Tailgate Village. Although appointments are encouraged, walk-ins are welcome.

“The winter months are among the most challenging time of the year for the Red Cross to collect blood donations,” Rebecca Rockhill, executive director for the Northeast Wisconsin Chapter of the American Red Cross, said in a news release.

“Many donors are busy with holiday activities, and inclement weather can force the cancellation of blood drives. Additionally, some donors become temporarily ineligible because of seasonal illnesses. If you are healthy, and eligible to give, please schedule an appointment. Donating blood is a great way to give a lifesaving gift this holiday season,” Rockhill continued.

All blood types are needed — particularly platelet and type O donors, as the Red Cross reels from a months-long shortfall in donations since late summer.

Donors who give blood at the drive will receive a free giveaway item as well as a free pie, while supplies last. They will also be entered in a raffle with the chance to win Packers prizes.

People with types O, A negative and B negative blood are urged to make a special “Power Red” donation at the event.

Power Red donors give a concentrated dose of red blood cells during a single donation, allowing them to maximize their impact. During this type of donation, red blood cells are separated from other blood components, and the plasma and platelets are safely and comfortably returned to the donor.

While at the blood drive, donors can also decorate and sign holiday cards, which are delivered to active-duty servicemembers, veterans and military families at hospitals and installations around the world as part of the Red Cross’s Holidays for Heroes program.

Free parking for the Give Back Community Blood Drive will be available in Lot 4 of Lambeau Field off Lombardi Avenue.
