‘I’ve never seen that much blood’: he survived a dog attack and now he wants to ensure it never happens again

SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio man’s Amazon delivery route turned into a fight for his life as 22-year-old Trey Rodriguez is now recovering from a dog attack.

Tuesday afternoon he showed us his bandages and more than 20 stitches.

He said they’re stark reminders of the horror he lived through Monday morning.

“I’m still trying to find things to do to get it off my mind. I just saw like so much blood. Like it was all over my shirt all over my arms all over my shorts, my legs. I’ve never seen that much blood before. And it was a lot to take in,” Rodriguez said.

An hour into his Amazon delivery shift Rodriguez was dropping off a package when he saw a beware of dog sign.

“I already knew like, okay, I gotta be cautious,” Rodriguez said.

Since a signature was needed Rodriguez waited for someone to come outside before getting out of his vehicle.

“I was walking over there was making sure that it was the right person, it was the right address. And then as I’m looking up, I just see a dog just already like lunging over,” Rodriguez said.

Each minute after Trey calls a fight for survival. He shared photos with us showing the aftermath of the brutal dog attack.

“I’m sure there were so many thoughts just running through your mind,” Reporter Amanda Henderson asked.

“I really felt like I was gonna die. It looked like he was literally trying to kill me,” Rodriguez said.

This is the latest dog attack San Antonio has seen in 2023. Several resulted in devastating injuries and one claimed the life of 81-year-old Ramon Najera.

Animal Care Services Director Shannon Sims said when this happened they immediately looked into the animal.

“Right now, just based on the 311 data that ACS has, we don’t see an established history,” Sims said.

Sims said the owner surrendered the dog to ACS and it was put down. He explains even without an incident history controlling your pet is your duty.

“If it bites someone, we’re ultimately going to hold you responsible because you are the responsible party and in the eyes of the law,” Sims said.

“What kind of justice would you like to see moving forward so that no one ever has to experience this,” Henderson asked.

“The justice that I that I really want is for homeowners to be better about certain dogs like this, or even any dog, they need to be better be treating your dogs better be making sure that they’re not going to attack somebody,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez said he does plan to return to work when he is able. Amazon is covering the cost of his stitches and his medicines through worker’s compensation, but not plastic surgery. Because he’s a contracted driver, he doesn’t have insurance through Amazon so his family started a GoFundMe.
