PENNSYLVANIA (WHP) — Utopia Foods Inc. announced a recall Tuesday for a brand of “Enoki Mushrooms,” which were supplied to wholesalers in multiple states, including Pennsylvania.
The mushrooms, from brand “Qilu Enterprse,” have the potential to be contaminated with bacteria Listeria monocytogenes — an organism that can cause serious and fatal infections in young children, the elderly and other populations with weakened immune systems.
The New York-based company also says Listeria monocytogenes infections can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women.
Healthy individuals with the infection may experience symptoms like high fevers, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
The mushrooms were supplied to wholesalers in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maryland between Aug. 7 and Oct. 20. The products are are packaged in a 200g, clear plastic bag with barcode 8928918610109.
Products may have been distributed to other retailers, like grocery stores.
Utopia Foods says no illnesses have been reported in connection with the mushrooms and that the potential contamination was found via routine sampling by the state of West Virginia on products labeled with an Oct. 26 expiration date.
All products within their expiry date are included in the recall and should not be eaten.
Utopia Foods says customers should return their recalled mushrooms to the appropriate retailer for a refund and that anyone with questions can call the company at (718) 389-8898.
