Family recalls alarming discovery after teen covered in blood emerges near interstate

A family in Asheville is recalling an alarming series of events after coming across a teenager covered in blood on the side of the interstate Sunday morning.

Heather Adams told News 13 her family was driving home from a wedding on Sunday morning, Oct. 29, when they came across a teenager coming out of the woods, bloodied and confused, near the I-40 and I-26 connect.

Adams said she and her son-in-law Danny sprang into action, calling 911 and trying to communicate with the teenager to get some answers.

She said the youth had blood coming from his head and inside of his mouth and looked completely disoriented.

Once they tried to ask him some simple questions, they realized it was worse than they thought.

“I guess he was saying audible words to my son-in-law,” Adams told News 13. “And he said, ‘do you need help?’ and he said ‘yes, I need help,’ but his mouth on the inside was almost like, there was dry, the blood was dry. It wasn’t fresh red.”

A spokesperson for the Asheville Police Department (APD) said the 911 call came in around 10:45 a.m. from I-26 East near Pond Road.

“My son-in-law said, ‘who are you with?’ and he pointed like this [to the empty space behind him] and said, ‘she’s right here,'” Adams continued.

APD told News 13 that once EMS arrived at the scene, they were able to determine that the teenager had been in a car crash in the area and decided to walk down the interstate, which led to these events unfolding.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment.

No other person has been reported as a part of this incident.
