UNMC’s Rupp announces planned departure as infectious disease chief

Dr. Mark Rupp, who has led the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Division on Infectious Diseases for more than a decade, announced Tuesday he will step down in 2024 from his leadership role. Rupp told colleagues of the news earlier in October according to UNMC’s daily news letter.“Dr. Rupp has provided nearly 13 years of outstanding leadership as division chief,” said Dr. Debra Romberger, chair of the UNMC Division of Internal Medicine in the news letter. “The division has grown in number of faculty, fellows… as well as in the complex services they provide.Rupp will remain in his current role as a national search takes place for his successor.“Dr. Rupp was an amazing servant leader throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and he helped his team provide incredible service to his division, his department, our patients and all his fellow Nebraskans,” said Romberger.“During an intense and challenging period, UNMC’s infectious diseases division rose to the challenge,” said UNMC Chancellor Dr. Jeffrey Gold. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Rupp frequently made himself available to answer questions and provide health information to the community. Rupp also was on the leadership team treating Americans with Ebola at Nebraska Medicine’s biocontainment unit. The vacancy Dr. Rupp will leave as director of Nebraska Medicine’s Infection Control and Epidemiology will be filled by Kelly Cawcutt, MD, according to UNMC.
