About Dr Brendan Chua

Dr Brendon Chua is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Microbiology & immunology at the University of Melbourne. His current research focuses on defining innate and adaptive immune-mediated mechanisms that drive disease severity caused by respiratory viral infections and those that underpin the efficacies of vaccination, and anti-viral interventions. He has previously held research positions at Monash University, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and the CRC for Polymers, as well as placements in the vaccine industry and his achievements have been recognised by fellowships, NHMRC research grants and industry funding. As a key inventor on several PCT patents granted in numerous international jurisdictions, he is co-founder and ongoing consultant of ENA Respiratory Pty Ltd (2015) and Axelia Oncology (2018), established to develop the use of TLR agonists that stimulate protective innate immunity against respiratory viral infections and cancer. Translational outcomes from his work led to human clinical and livestock trials. He currently also holds an appointment as an Associate Professor of Hokkaido University and is a founding member of the Global Institute of Collaborative Research & Education (GI- CoRE) in Japan.
