PARKERSBURG — The American Red Cross is encouraging people to add a new tradition to their holiday repertoire — donating blood.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of the classic Christmas movie “Elf,” people who donate blood through Nov. 30 will receive a pair of “Elf” and Red Cross socks, while supplies last.

According to a release from the Red Cross, blood donations often decline during the holiday season. Donors of all blood types are urged to give, especially those with type O blood and those giving platelets.

People can book a blood donation appointment by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years old in most states (or 16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

There are also volunteer opportunities at blood drives, where ambassadors help greet, check in and thank blood donors to ensure they have a positive experience. For more information and to apply, contact [email protected] or visit redcross.org/volunteertoday.
