HVFD hosts successful blood drive

The Blood Drive held at the Hemingford Fire Department on Wednesday, November 8 turned into a successful event even though there were many other items that were pulling donors away from Hemingford. The West Nebraska Blood Center (WNBC) was pleased with the response, there were 39 units of whole blood sent back to Regional West Medical Center. The day did start out quickly only to slow down due to illnesses, low iron, upcoming procedures, recent procedures and some vaccinations. The excellent harvest weather also kept many donors in the field so we hope they are able to return for the Blood Drive in February.

It is always amazing to see when one group is not able to donate another group steps in to pick up the slack. While there were no new donors this time, we saw a number of donors that have not been able to donate in a while. The list of donors is as follows: Kathey Andersen, John Annen, Robyn Armenta, Shad Bryner, Deb Campbell, Michael Cardona, Elijah Cookston, Joei Cullan, Lori Dannar, Ryan Dannar, Ellen Fester, Dennis Folkerts, Colleen Garner, Jeannine Gasseling, Melissa Haas, Margaret Hartman, Mike Honstein, Rick Horstman, Ryan Hunter, Patrick Huss, Phyllis Jesse, Cheryl Kaman, Barb Keegan, Jim Keegan, Sara Knote, Will Mahony, Susan Morava, Brad Olson, Dave Paris, Brad Petersen, Shawn Phillips, John Prochazka, Rod Prochazka, Vy Prochazka, Brittney Sorensen, Rhonda Swanson, Heidi Tuma, Mary Wernke and Bruce Winten.

Hemingford has had a very stable pool of donors as well as employers that support both the donors and the HVFD. About an hour and a half prior to the end of the blood draws, a fire call came in: the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department was requesting Mutual Aid for a fire. Three firemen had already donated and one fireman was about to start donating blood and left the cot to respond. Two more firemen donated while the call was going on and upon return from the call two more were able to donate. While these seven firemen/women are doing no more than the other 32 donors; it proves that you can return to your regular job, without deficits, and continue on as if nothing happened. By taking the 30 to 45 minutes away from your schedule, you are able to help so many people return to their lives. If you have considered making a blood donation but feel you may not be the right person to do it, please contact any of the above listed people to listen to their stories.

The HVFD and WNBC appreciate everyone who made a difference by donating. Stay safe as harvest continues.
