Badges battle in blood drive

In a display of unity and selflessness, the Fort Cavazos community recently witnessed a showdown that went beyond the typical rivalry between fire and police departments. The second annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive, a friendly competition between Fort Cavazos Fire/Emergency Medical Services and Police/Security, unfolded to benefit the Armed Services Blood Program.

“The Battle of the Badges is a healthy competition encouraging first responders to contribute to saving lives in a different way,” Police Lt. Andrew Samarripa said when asked why this event is so important. “Through fun competition, our blood donation restores wellbeing and potentially saves lives in the military community. The very nature of a servant’s heart is shown by an individual giving of themself to the community they serve without expectations or rewards.”

Fire Inspector Belinda “Gail” Worry was asked the same question and she shared that this is a simple responsibility for her now that she can donate.

“Prior to last year, I wasn’t permitted to donate blood,” Worry said. “However, as soon as I got the clear to donate, I signed up. I’m a first responder and have worked many traumas in which patients lose a lot of blood. For me to take an hour out of my day to donate is a no brainer. To be honest, I don’t understand why more people don’t donate. It’s painless, easy to do and extremely satisfying knowing you’ve helped another person.”

The event, held at the Robertson Blood Center at Fort Cavazos, was a testament to the unity and camaraderie that exists between the Fort Cavazos Fire and Police departments. They set aside their professional rivalries to focus on a shared goal: contributing to the ASBP.

The ASBP is a vital component of the military medical system, ensuring a stable and safe blood supply for active-duty service members, their families and veterans. Its mission is to collect, process, store and distribute blood and blood products to support the medical needs of our military community worldwide.

With military personnel frequently deployed in high-risk environments, the need for blood transfusions is a constant reality. The ASBP serves as a lifeline, offering a reliable source of blood and blood products, especially during times of conflict and crisis.

“It has been great hosting the Battle of the Badges at Robertson Blood Center,” Ian Wilson, Robertson Blood Center recruiter, said. “To know that our Fort Cavazos first responders are willing and able to take the time to donate blood and save lives in so many ways, is awe inspiring.

“I look forward to the Battle of the Badges for 2024,” he continued, “and the continued support of blood donations to the Armed Services Blood Program throughout the year as well.”

The Fort Cavazos Police/Security team was awarded as the winners of this year’s Battle of the Badges Blood Drive.
