A recent study found cardiovascular mortality increased 9.3% from 2019 to 2022.
The study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, examined national mortality data from 2010 to 2022. During that time, nearly 11 million cardiovascular deaths occurred, with 75.6% dying of heart disease and 16.9% of stroke.
From 2010 to 2019, the age-adjusted mortality rate per 100,000 patients declined by 8.9%. However, from 2019 to 2022, it increased by 9.3%. Stroke deaths increased year over year, while heart disease increased until 2022, where it remained steady.
The study estimated 228,524 excess cardiovascular deaths occurred from 2020 to 2022. Excess deaths were most common among people ages 75 to 84 and Black and Asian or Pacific Islander adults.
