Understanding Seminal HPV Infection: An Overview

The following is a summary of “Seminal human papillomavirus infection: a narrative review,” published in the August 2023 issue of Infectious Disease by Santos et al.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection that can cause cancer and fertility problems. Researchers started a retrospective study to assess HPV prevalence, semen parameters, reproductive outcomes, and preventive measures in males.

They conducted a comprehensive literature search using PubMed/Medline and Embase databases, covering English articles published up to July 2023. The analysis encompassed three critical dimensions: first, the prevalence of HPV semen infection and its effects on seminal parameters. Second, the link between HPV in semen and fertility/reproductive risks, and lastly, possible ways to lessen the negative impact of HPV semen infection. One author initially reviewed the studies independently, later validated by two additional authors. Information was extracted from 19 studies.

The results showed a higher prevalence of HPV infection in semen among males experiencing infertility. Amidst ongoing discussions about how seminal HPV infection directly affects sperm parameters, more research links unexplained infertility to this type of HPV infection. Seminal HPV infection correlates with reduced pregnancy rates and increased miscarriage occurrences. Promising prevention methods, such as HPV vaccination, are being considered.

Investigators concluded that more research is needed to confirm the link between HPV infection and reproductive outcomes, as well as the benefits of preventive measures.
