The Prince William County animal shelter is limiting dog instakes after a recent increase in canine upper respiratory infections.
In a Facebook post, the shelter said the “health and well-being of the animals in our care is our top priority.” Staff has implemented “rigorous” containment protocols to limit the spread of infections, the post said. All infected animals are receiving appropriate veterinary care.
“Our priority is to protect the health of all animals in our care, prevent the spread of new infections, and support their recovery,” the shelter said. “Your patience and understanding is appreciated.”
Several states are investigating an unusual respiratory illness in dogs, the Associated Press reported last week. The illness has caused lingering respiratory disease and pneumonia and does not respond to antibiotics.
“Symptoms of respiratory illness in dogs include coughing, sneezing, nasal or eye discharge and lethargy. Some cases of the pneumonia progress quickly, making dogs very sick within 24 to 36 hours.” the AP wrote.
