Often times symptoms of allergies can be that of sinus infections, it can be hard to determine. Here with more is Dr. Charles Tebbit is an ear, nose, and throat specialist who practices out of our Belmont office.  Some allergy and sinus patients experience drippy nose. Other patients are “blockers” in that their nose simply blocks up. Both types of patients may also have bouts of sneezing, itching in the nose and throat and itchy, watery eyes. Sinus patients are known to have pain and experience pressure behind the eyes or near or at the ears.  Another clue is the timing of symptoms. “When the weather changes and it get colder people can experience many sinus problems because of ragweed, pollen and colder weather” says Dr. Tebbit. He adds “there are 8 sinuses in your face 4 on each side so problems may appear from any location.”  Over the counter treatments include Tylenol or Ibuprofen for the pain. Typically a decongestant or antihistamine may work something like Afrin or Mucinex; however if the problem persist you may need to get a CT scan. If you have been on antibiotics four or more times during the past year, there is an increased likelihood that you may have chronic sinusitis. That likelihood is even greater if the antibiotics were appropriately prescribed for bacterial sinusitis, not simply colds, and if you had at least temporary improvement while on antibiotics If antibiotics don’t clear up infections then you may need a couple of inner office procedures, FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) or Balloon Sinuplasty.
