Experts have warned that the way we’ve been using toilet paper could actually be causing a number of infections and ailments. According to Japanese scientists, swapping paper for a bidet – where your private areas are washed with water, rather than wiped – is best, as reported by DailyMail.
By washing instead of wiping, the chance of developing infections can be dramatically reduced. A study published in the Journal of Water & Health in 2022, found that those who used a bidet had ten times fewer harmful bacteria on their hands, compared to toilet paper users.
Dr Evan Goldstein, a rectal surgeon in New York City, explained to Insider that using a bidet is far superior for infection control than paper. He said: “Charmin and all these brands have done a great job making us think that toilet paper is hygienic. It’s not.”
He also explained using toilet paper could cause anal tears, as dry toilet paper can be abrasive. Using the wrong type of paper and using it incorrectly could also lead to issues such as irritation, haemorrhoids, and potentially deadly infections.
Therefore, experts recommend using strong, absorbent, and soft toilet tissue. Dr Trisha Pasricha, a gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, suggested dabbing paper around the back passage rather than wiping.
According to Cottonelle, you should “be sure” to pat and not “scrub”. The site says: “When wiping – be gentle! Your privates are sensitive parts. Don’t use too much force when wiping, and never use a scrubbing motion. It can cause microtears in which bacteria can enter.”
Back in 2019, Dr Luke Powles, from Bupa, advised researchers on the best toilet practice for ladies. He said: “A woman’s urethra and anus are quite closely located, so it’s best to wipe from front to back. Otherwise you could be spreading faeces from the anus to the urethra. Spreading bacteria to the urethra can lead to a urinary tract infection.”
