Only five percent of people provide the blood and platelets needed in the United States. Dr. Liz Culler, chief medical officer for Blood Assurance, said shortages in the blood supply become critical during the holiday season.
“A lot happens during the holidays,” Culler said. “There’s a greater demand for surgery — people are trying to get procedures done before their insurance runs out or get things they’ve been worried about checked out while relatives are visiting and can be supportive.”
