Battle of the Badges local blood drive has a winner

Summertime is a difficult time of year for gathering much-needed blood donations. That’s why local provider Versiti organized a Battle of the Badges blood drive. Versiti is the sole blood provider for Corewell Health and over 85 other hospitals throughout the State of Michigan.

But because people are often off enjoying summer vacation, getting people to donate is difficult, even though demand remains high. Organizing a Battle of the Badges encouraged community members to donate on behalf of their favorite first responders.

Participating agencies included Saint Joseph F.O.P #96, New Buffalo Public Safety, Niles Police Department, Coloma Township Hall, and Lake Charter Township. The total donations from Berrien County First Responders are estimated to helping impact 213 lives.

Between EMS, Fire, and Police, Undersheriff Chuck Heit was pleased to hear the most votes went to law enforcement.

”Who really wins are the patients that need the blood. So as we look at it in the summertime, when they’re lower from a giving standpoint, we tried to do what we could to step up and provide the blood necessary,” said Heit.

Even though the battle of the badges for 2023 is over, you can still donate. For more information, visit Versiti.org.
