Upshur blood drive set for Friday

BUCKHANNON — Upshur County residents will have the opportunity to give blood during a special community event this week.

WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur will offer a blood drive on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The event will take place in the Social Hall in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 35 Franklin Street in Buckhannon.

The blood will be drawn by Vitalant, the blood supplier for St. Joseph’s Hospital and United Hospital Center.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood, officials said.

Blood donations assist patients diagnosed with cancer, accident and burn victims, and heart surgery and organ transplant patients.

The COVID-19 pandemic made blood collection more difficult, and had a negative effect on blood donation within the U.S., as many of the normal blood drives across the country were postponed for months or event years. Blood drives are very important because it is essential that there is a sufficient blood supply for local hospitals.

If you are willing to donate, an appointment is recommended. You can schedule an appointment by going to vitalant.org and using the Blood Drive Code UW4310005, or search by zip code. You can also call 304-473-2164 or email [email protected].

St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur also held blood screenings by appointment in April.

The Rotary Club of Buckhannon-Upshur is part of a network of more than 35,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide committed to providing service to others, promoting integrity and advancing goodwill and peace.
