Pre-Infection COVID Vaccination Prevented Post-Infection Deaths by 60%: Study

A study led by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) revealed that COVID-19 vaccination prior to SARS-CoV-2 virus infection prevented 60 per cent of post-infection deaths in India.
The ICMR’s National Clinical Registry for COVID-19 examined factors related to post-discharge mortality during the first year after COVID-19 in 14,419 participants, unveiling that men, adults over 40, individuals with comorbidities, and those afflicted with moderate-severe COVID-19 faced a higher risk of death within one year after discharge.
The study noted similar trends in participants aged 18-45 years.
Among the 14,419 participants, 942 (6.5 per cent) experienced all-cause mortality.
However, researchers cautioned that the findings were specific to patients hospitalised during their initial COVID-19 infection and couldn’t be generalised to all patients.
ICMR is also engaged in other investigations aimed at comprehending the unusual surge in “sudden deaths” among young individuals post the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rajiv Bahl, ICMR Director General (DG), stated, “We are studying sudden deaths. There are four studies going on. We will get the results soon and will let everyone know as we are continuing to look at it from different angles whether there is an increase in the number of deaths,” as he told IANS in June.
He mentioned that “we are trying to see what are potential causes” and ICMR is awaiting peer review of the findings before making the assessment public.
Bahl added that the individuals who passed away are considered ‘cases’, while survivors are considered ‘controls’.
“There is a design which is called a case-control study. In case-control, the deaths are due to heart attacks. In this, all factors are seen – age, morbidity, habits, how they contracted COVID-19, whether it was severe COVID-19, if they took the COVID-19 vaccine or not, and numerous other factors,” explained the DG.
