CITY OFFICIALS SAY THE SHELTER’S VET STAFF NOTICED AN UPTAKE IN THOSE UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTIONS AMONG THE DOG POPULATION AND THEY SENT SAMPLES TO THE LAB YESTERDAY, THEY SAY ABOUT 65 DOGS HAVE SYMPTOMS. The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter has been closed for a third time this year to prevent disease from spreading from the shelter to other dogs in the public.Shelter officials said in a news release that the latest closure is because of an upper respiratory infection. The shelter’s veterinarian noticed an increase in upper respiratory infections among the dogs and sent samples to a lab.About 65 dogs have symptoms, according to shelter officials.The shelter veterinarian and staff are working on a plan as they await the lab results; however, they suspect the canine flu is spreading through the shelter again. It’s the same virus that closed the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter on March 29 and June 3 and other OKC metro-area shelters in recent months.The staff is treating the infected dogs with antibiotics again, the news release states. People who adopted dogs from the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter last week should monitor their dogs for upper respiratory-type symptoms such as a cough and runny nose.
