House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, he said in a statement Tuesday, adding that he expects to work through his treatment.

Scalise, 57, said he underwent blood work last week after “a few days of not feeling like” himself, and the results showed abnormalities that eventually led to a diagnosis.

Scalise said the cancer was detected “early” and is “very treatable,” adding that he has begun treatment and hopes to work through it: “I expect to work through this period and intend to return to Washington,” he said.
