Parents alerted of skin infections among babies born in Wexford General Hospital

Parents have been alerted that a “very small number” of skin infections have been diagnosed in newborn babies recently discharged from Wexford General Hospital since early August.
A spokesman for the Ireland East Hospital Group said parents are being asked to be vigilant for symptoms.
It is understood the outbreak is due to a bacterial infection and it has also affected a number staff, although this is not confirmed.
He said all mothers and relevant guardians have been contacted directly and provided with information and advice regarding this issue.
“We have also notified local GPs,” said the spokesman.
Local GPs suggested that around nine babies are impacted.
The hospital spokesman added: ”We are asking parents and caregivers to maintain an increased awareness and vigilance for signs and symptoms of skin infections in babies – and their mothers – born in Wexford General Hospital August 2 last.”
The signs and symptoms of skin infection can include:
*Redness of the skin
*Swelling of the skin
*Blistering
*Fever and lethargy
The spokesman said that hospital management and officials from Public Health South East are investigating the causes of these infections and have put in place enhanced infection prevention and control precautions.
The advice to parents is :”If you have any concerns around signs and symptoms of skin infection in a baby to whom you are providing care, please attend your local GP who can assess and advise as appropriate.
“To help answer any additional questions you might have, a telephone line has been established.”
The line is open 10am to 7pm from Thursday September 21 to Tuesday, September 26, inclusive of Saturday and Sunday. The number to call is: 0877597009. It will be available between 10am and 7pm for six days, September 21, to September 26.
