Victim didn’t even realize best friend had stabbed him – until he saw the blood

SHARON – Devin Evans didn’t even realize his best friend had stabbed him during a drunken fight until after his friend left – and he realized the blood all over his house was coming from him.

Evans, of Sharon, testified at a preliminary hearing Friday against Jared Anthony Ser, 27, of 522 McClure Ave., who is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, kidnapping, intimidating a witness, unlawful restraint and tampering with evidence for his role in the stabbing of Evans around 5:35 p.m. Sept. 11.

District Judge Travis P. Martwinski held the charges over to Mercer County Common Pleas Court after testimony from the victim, an eyewitness and Sharon police officers.

Evans testified that Ser is his best friend. He said Ser had been staying with him for a couple of weeks while he tried to get his life back together.

Evans said Sept. 11 was like any other day. The pair were hanging out on the back porch of Evans’ apartment in the 100 block of North Sharpsville Avenue in downtown Sharon, and they drank about a half bottle of vodka.

“When we drink, it’s never a good thing,” Evans testified. “We get aggressive.”

Evans said he had asked Ser to leave the apartment for the night because he was having a girl stay there. Evans left to go to the grocery store and came back to find his dog locked outside on the porch for the third time that week, and he “bugged out.”

Evans testified that he wanted Ser to leave and he was trying to get him to leave when the argument escalated and became physical. Both men threw punches, and Ser even fell through drywall at one point. During the fight, Evans said he was pushing Ser toward the back porch so he would go down the stairs and leave.

After Ser left, Evans said he saw blood all over the place and started to clean it up, when blood spurted out of his arm. He then realized the blood was coming from him and that he should find his phone and call for help. Evans testified that he never saw Ser with the knife that day and does not remember being stabbed.

Meanwhile, Ser left, and Jasmine Maybe saw him walking the street barefoot with blood on his arms.

Maybe testified that she picked up Ser, and he told her he stabbed Evans. She said he had a knife that was covered in blood and that he was scraping blood off his face with the knife.

She testified that Ser told her that she couldn’t go back and check on Evans or he would knock her out and take her keys. So they drove to her home, where he started to clean the blood off his arms.

She testified that the pair talked, and he finally let her go check on Evans.

Maybe said when she saw Evans, he had chunks of fat hanging from his arms and he was asking for help, saying that he was going to die. He told her that Ser stabbed him, she testified.

Evans was taken by ambulance to a trauma center with what police described as life-threatening injuries.

Evans said he was stabbed in his spine, triceps, biceps and between his ribs. One of his lungs was punctured. He said he has not worked in two weeks at his job, where he performs heavy lifting. He is hoping there are other duties for him to perform, as he cannot lift heavy objects with his left arm.

Ser’s first appearance in common pleas court will be at his arraignment scheduled for Nov. 21. He was taken back to Mercer County Jail on a $300,000 bond.
