University of Vermont Health Network, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital is requiring patients and visitors to resume masking.

The Plattsburgh hospital says the change comes as COVID infection rates rise in the region and the hospital itself manages an outbreak. Employees have also returned to masking and, if appropriate, the use of protective eyewear.

“In order to protect our patients, our staff and families, we are requiring all patients and visitors to wear appropriate face coverings, surgical masks, while they are with us,” said Dr. Keith Collins, an infectious disease specialist, in a statement. “COVID can be spread before you have symptoms and you may not know you are carrying it.”

Collins says masking has been shown to reduce the risk of exposure to airborne pathogens indoors. He also recommends people get vaccinated against COVID-19, or get their COVID boosters.

In a press release, CVPH said the hospital has seen an increased number of COVID-positive admissions, emergency visits and employees out of work after testing positive.

“We have a number of patients who were diagnosed with COVID here. Because it’s unclear how they came in contact with the virus, universal masking is the best way to combat its spread,” said Dr. Lisa Mark, vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer.

Prospective visitors who are sick or feeling unwell are asked to postpone their visits or find alternatives to in-person visitation, like video visits.

Free surgical/procedural masks are available at the hospital’s entrance.
