A wanted man, who was found covered in blood after an attack on a woman, allegedly struck sheriff’s canine Dax after the police dog tracked him down and bit him in Round Lake Beach Saturday.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said Sanjuan Reyes, 36, of Round Lake Beach, drove to a relative’s home in Joliet early Saturday morning.

Reyes was covered in blood and intoxicated and left the home shortly after arriving.

His family became concerned that he may have killed a family member that he lives with in Round Lake Beach, Covelli said.

The family called the Joliet Police Department who then notified the Round Lake Beach Police Department.

Police responded to Reyes’ residence but did not locate anyone.

They developed information Reyes might have been in the area of Route 83 and Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach.

Officers located Reyes’ vehicle in a parking lot and found it had a significant amount of blood inside of it, Covelli said.

Covelli said it was learned that Reyes attacked the family member he lives with at a location in Waukegan before driving to Joliet.

The victim, a 39-year-old woman, sustained several injuries in the attack, including broken bones. She was admitted to an area hospital.

Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Dax responded around 5:50 a.m. Saturday to the scene near Route 83 and Rollins Road to conduct a track following the discovery of the abandoned vehicle.

Dax tracked for approximately a half-mile and located Reyes hiding in a thick bush line.

Covelli said Reyes refused to surrender and Dax bit him. Reyes struck Dax during the apprehension, Covelli said.

Dax was evaluated by his veterinarian and determined to be uninjured.

Reyes was charged with aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery, two counts of domestic battery, striking a police animal and resisting arrest.

Lake County Judge Stacey Seneczko ordered Reyes held in the Lake County Jail pending a detention hearing after prosecutors filed a petition to detain him pre-trial.

Reyes is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing Tuesday afternoon.
