Gundersen hosts blood stem cell registration drive

“Be The Match” registry began today to encourage community members to donate to help those with blood cancer.

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) – Gundersen Health System partnered up with the Be The Match organization to host a blood stem cell registration drive on Thursday.

Those who signed up at the event were added to Be The Match’s registry which could lead to becoming a donor to someone in need.

Organizers said that every 3-4 minutes, someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer with the only cure a blood stem cell transplant.

There are already a large group of people who donate but the need is always there.

“Luckily we have over 20 million individuals who have stepped up to join the Be The Match registry but because people continue to get diagnosed and how difficult it is to find a match, we need people to keep joining. So we need as many people on the registry as possible to increase the likelihood we can find a match when we need one,” said Rachael Rich, Member Enrollment Coordinator for Be The Match.
