With back pain, getting out of bed can help

Bed rest can be beneficial for back pain, especially if the pain is severe while sitting or standing. However, it’s essential to limit bed rest during the day to a few hours at a time and for no more than a couple of days. Prolonged bed rest can have negative consequences.

If you need to lie down, choose a comfortable position on a bed or sofa. To alleviate strain on your back, use pillows under your head and between your knees when lying on your side, under your knees when lying on your back, or under your hips when lying on your stomach. These positions help reduce stress on the lower spine, including disks, ligaments, and muscles.

While bed rest was once a common treatment for back strain, it is no longer the preferred approach for moderate back pain. Extended bed rest can weaken muscles, including those supporting the back, and may lead to problems such as constipation and an increased risk of blood clots. Inactivity raises the likelihood of developing a blood clot in the veins of the pelvis and legs, which can be harmful.

Moreover, research trials suggest that an early return to physical activity or work, with some restrictions or light duty if necessary, is preferable to prolonged bed rest. This approach has been shown to be more effective in managing back pain.

What type of mattress is best for people with low back pain?

Choosing the right mattress is crucial, considering you spend about one-third of your life in bed. While a softer mattress that conforms to your body’s natural curves may help align your joints, sinking too deeply can cause joint discomfort during the night.

To find the ideal mattress, consider trying out different ones. If you stay at a hotel or someone else’s house, take note of how you feel after sleeping on their bed. Another method is to experiment with your current mattress by placing a plywood board underneath it (to reduce movement from bedsprings) or sleeping with your mattress on the floor for a few nights (simulating the feel of a firm bed). These practices can help you assess your comfort preferences and identify the type of mattress that suits you best.
